Common Sleep Disorders and How to Treat Them

Sleep disorders keep you from getting a goodnight’s rest. More than 100 million people have reported they don’t get enough sleep and have difficulty falling asleep. However, it is not a sleep disorder until you’re regularly experiencing trouble sleeping. Approximately 70 million people suffer from different types of sleep disorders in the US.

Here is a brief intro to different types of sleep disorders that are prevalent in the US.

Sleep Apnea

If your breathing is interrupted during sleep, you may have sleep apnea. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is caused when the airway is blocked when the soft tissue at the back of the throat collapses during sleep.

Central sleep apnea (CSA) is related to the function of the central nervous system, so it is named Central Sleep Apnea.

Insomnia

About 10% of adults experience persistent insomnia. It can be triggered on its own or can be caused by medical or psychiatric conditions. If the condition is short-lived, it is known as acute insomnia, and if it is prolonged, it is known as chronic insomnia.

Narcolepsy

If you’re experiencing overwhelming drowsiness or uncontrolled sleep during the day, it might be due to narcolepsy. Sudden sleep attacks can occur at any time of the day. You can even experience sudden muscle weakness when laughing too hard. Narcolepsy can often go undiagnosed so, it’s best to get yourself checked by a doctor if you have any symptoms of this disease.

Restless Legs Syndrome

Restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is an intense and irresistible urge to move your legs constantly while the body is at rest. This condition is aggravated in the evening while your body is not too active, making it difficult to fall asleep.  People with RLS often end up walking and strolling to mitigate the uncomfortable sensation.
